چکیده

We review results obtained with a recently proposed variational cluster approach (VCA) for the competition between d-wave superconductivity (dSC) and antiferromagnetism (AF) in the high-TC cuprates. Comparing the single-particle spectra of a two-dimensional Hubbard model with quantum Monte-Carlo (QMC) and experimental data, we verify that the VCA correctly treats the low-energy excitations. The cluster calculations reproduce the overall ground-state phase diagram of the high-temperature superconductors both for electronand hole-doping. In particular, they include salient features such as the enhanced robustness of the AF state in case of electron doping. For electronbut also for hole-doping, we clearly identify a tendency to phase separation into a mixed AF-dSC phase at low and a pure dSC-phase at high doping.

Topological Criticality on Brink of the Mott Transition in High-Tc Superconductors

The concept of topological excitations and the related ground state degeneracy are employed to establish an effective theory of the superconducting state evolving from the Mott insulator for high-Tc cuprates. The theory includes the effects of the relevant energy scales with the emphasis on the Coulomb interaction U governed by the electromagnetic U(1) compact group. The results are obtained fo...

On the basis of the one–band t–t–Hubbard model a self–consistent renormalization theory of magnetic short–range order (SRO) in the paramagnetic phase is presented combining the four–field slave–boson functional–integral scheme with the cluster variational method. Contrary to previous SRO approaches the SRO is incorporated at the saddle–point and pair–approximation levels. A detailed numerical e...

Gap and pseudogap evolution within the charge-ordering scenario for superconducting cuprates

We describe the spectral properties of underdoped cuprates as resulting from a momentumdependent pseudogap in the normal state spectrum. Such a model accounts, within a BCS approach, for the doping dependence of the critical temperature and for the two-parameter leading-edge shift observed in the cuprates. By introducing a phenomenological temperature dependence of the pseudogap, which finds a ...

Pour L'obtention Du Grade De Docteur Ès Sciences

The discovery of high temperature superconductivity in the cuprates in 1986 has boosted the research in strongly correlated materials. One strong motivation was and stays the understanding the high-Tc phenomenon with the hope that one can ultimately engineer new materials with even higher Tc. Besides the in-depth investigation of cuprates, there is a strong tendency in the solid state community...

Study of the ionic Peierls-Hubbard model using density matrix renormalization group methods

Density matrix renormalization group methods are used to investigate the quantum phase diagram of a one-dimensional half-filled ionic Hubbard model with bond-charge attraction, which can be mapped from the Su-SchriefferHeeger-type electron-phonon coupling at the antiadiabatic limit. A bond order wave (dimerized) phase which separates the band insulator from the Mott insulator always exists as l...
